Modern Moksha: Freedom and the Clash of Karmas
James Bailey, E-RYT 500 |
Crystal B C |
 |
Lecture & Practice:
In spiritual living a powerful duality often arises between the desire to transcend the limitations of the ordinary human body/mind, with the urge to maintain it, to care and heal the body and mind. As yogis become more skilled, tension often arises between the desire for moksha (liberation) and the responsibility for family and work in the world. This session is designed to help better integrate the impulse for liberation with the householder needs of the modern western yogi. Explore the narrative and nature of this overarching story in order to find the middle path where the two disciplines can share the wisdom of life.

James is a third generation healer, CAM physician and yoga educator who has been living yoga and ayurveda for 25 years. He practices Ayurveda, Marma Therapies, Acupuncture and wellness counseling to aid patients towards their true nature of well being. James teaches Yoga, Ayurveda and meditation workshops worldwide. Yoga, Animals and Ecology
Dennis Eagan, E-RYT 500 |
Sardinia |
|
Lecture & Practice:
What does a furry, little marine mammal have to do with Yoga? With its influence on history, economies and the environment, the sea otter models the flow of energy between all species. The plethora of deities and yoga postures named after animals is not mere symbolism, but an indication of the deep respect the early yogis had for the creatures in their environment. Come meet the local hero of California's coastal waters ecosystem and discover the link between ancient yoga philosophy and today’s challenging environmental issues.
About the teacher:
Whether in the yoga studio or on a retreat in the wilderness, Dennis weaves his love of nature into his yoga teaching. He is director of Advanced Studies at the Bo Tree Yoga Studio in Davis, California and also at Balanced Rock in Yosemite National Park. Lecture:
The online classroom is a potentially powerful teaching and learning arena in which new practices and new relationships can make significant contributions to learning. In order to successfully navigate the power of this medium for use in training and education, instructors must be trained not only to use technology, but also to shift the ways in which they organize and deliver material. This shift can maximize the potential for learners to take charge of their own learning process and can facilitate the development of a sense of community among the learners. This session will focus on the skills necessary to make the transition from face-to-face instruction to online instruction and will present best practices for online teaching.
About the teachesr:
Rena Palloff and Keith Pratt are the managing partners of Crossroads Consulting Group, working with academic institutions and business and professional organizations in the development and delivery of effective online education and training programs. Dinner with Speaker, Mark Singleton
Yoga Body: Historical Contexts for Modern Asana Practice |
Emerald 4 5 6 7 8 |
 |
It's often said that yoga is a 5000 year old tradition from India. In some respects this is true. But what about the practices we do today? Is there
really a direct link to the ancient past, or is the story more complicated? Today yoga is virtually synonymous in the West with the practice of
āsana. And yet, in spite of the immense popularity of yoga worldwide, there is little evidence that āsana has ever been the primary aspect of any
Indian yoga practice tradition—including the medieval, body‐oriented hatha yoga. How did this strange situation come about? What can we
learn from the modern history of āsana? And what does it mean for our practice today?
About Mark:
Mark Singleton has a Ph.D in Divinity from Cambridge University. He has published extensively on modern yoga, including the first collection of
scholarship on the topic, Yoga in the Modern World (2008), and the ground‐breaking study of the modern history of āsana, Yoga Body, The
Origins of Modern Posture Practice. He is a yoga teacher in the Iyengar and Satyananda traditions. His opinions on yoga have appeared (among
other places) in the New York Times and Yoga Journal.

Yoga For Releasing Trauma and the Psoas
Mimi Solaire, E-RYT 500 |
Mountain View |
 |
Lecture & Practice:
Trauma Release Yoga, based on the work of David Bercelli, is a gentle effective technique that facilitates the lengthening and relaxation of the psoas muscle to release physical and emotional tension, stress and trauma. Yoga poses that focus on strengthening and stretching the psoas, trigger a shaking response and release emotional tension held in the psoas. This mind-body practice may help to release chronic muscular tension, symptoms of sciatica and decrease other pains and tensions in the body. Participants will learn simple yoga poses to induce the tremoring mechanism and release the psoas.
About the teacher:
Mimi Solaire has an eclectic style informed by her training in yoga, dance, performance, the aerial arts and her certification in Trauma Release Yoga. Her greatest teacher was a neck injury sustained in a car accident that healed through Yoga and Eastern healing techniques. She teaches at Life Power in Scottsdale and Phoenix, Arizona, and leads retreats throughout the world. Mimi has produced three highly acclaimed DVDs: Back in Shape, Prenatal Yoga and Deep Stretch/Yin Yoga.

Future Directions for Yoga in the West |
Emerald 4 5 6 7 8 |
 |
The ancient Yoga teachings have much to say about where yoga — and for that matter, our entire world — has been and is now heading. They
suggest that the future promises ever‐wider acceptance of yoga and unprecedented opportunity to affect positive change in the world. Yet with
acceptance and opportunity come pitfalls and challenges. Gyandev will share thoughts on the role of the yoga community in these changes, and
how we yogis can participate in the unfolding drama.
About Gyandev:
Nayaswami Gyandev has taught all aspects of Yoga—including asana, meditation, and yoga philosophy—in the Ananda tradition since 1983. He is director of
Ananda Yoga worldwide and of Ananda Yoga Teacher Training at Ananda’s retreat center, The Expanding Light, near Nevada City, CA. He also
teaches throughout the U.S. as well as in Canada, India, and Europe.
Nayaswami Gyandev is a co‐founder of Yoga Alliance and currently serves on its board of directors. He has authored two videos (Yoga for Busy People and
Yoga to Awaken the Chakras), two yoga therapy books (Yoga Therapy for Headache Relief and Yoga Therapy for Overcoming Insomnia), and a
variety of CD’s. A disciple of Paramhansa Yogananda, he lives in the Ananda Village ashram in Northern California.

The Neurophysiology of Enlightenment: Modern Science Sheds New Light on the Ancient Practice of Yoga |
Emerald 4 5 6 7 8 |
 |
Since ancient times, the cherished goal of Yoga has been the attainment of Moksha—Nirvikalpa Samadhi—Enlightenment. In recent times, the Western scientific research community has focused on the more pedestrian but practical goals of improved physical and mental wellbeing. However, recent scientific studies on long-term Yoga practitioners are starting to report an interesting and potentially important “side effect” of sustained yoga practice: evidence of higher states of consciousness beyond waking, dreaming and deep sleep. These published findings provide empirical support for the Yogic hypothesis of higher states of consciousness, and impact substantially our basic understanding of the nature of consciousness and the limits of human potential.
About John:
John Hagelin, Ph.D., is a world-renowned quantum physicist, educator, public policy expert, and leading proponent of peace. Dr. Hagelin received his A.B. summa cum laude from Dartmouth College and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University, and conducted pioneering research at CERN (the European Center for Particle Physics) and SLAC (the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center). His scientific contributions in the fields of electroweak unification, grand unification, supersymmetry and cosmology include some of the most cited references in the physical sciences. He is responsible for the development of a highly successful Grand Unified Field Theory based on the Superstring—a theory that was featured in a cover story of Discover magazine.
